Taqueria El Fogon, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

March 9, 2009 by artandchel

El Fogon

El Fogon

On the way to Playa del Carmen from the Cancun airport, Chelsea asked our cab driver where he likes to eat in town. He recommended El Fogon for tacos. Thank you, Jose, thank you very much for that recommendation.

El Fogon is a bright, bustling, open-air taqueria off the beaten path from 5th Avenue, the center of Playa Del Carmen. It is well worth the trip for anyone who is looking for a real Mexican eating and drinking experience while in town.

Here’s what to get: tacos al pastor, tacos al pastor with cheese, grilled knob onions, a side of nopales, frijoles charros, the pork special (a whopping trio of fresh and cured meats that I would highly recommend sharing), and micheladas or licuados to drink.

Here’s a video of El Fogon in action. The pork special is about 3/4 of the way through the video.

Warning! This video may induce severe hunger:

[...] A few years ago when looking for the ultimate in real, local Mexican food, we were directed to El Fogon.  It is a few blocks into town and away from the tourist strip, but that still doesn’t stop [...]
